A new publication uncovers clues as to why preterm babies with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) may have problems learning, thinking and remembering. A study led by former Xplore Lab team member Dr. Marissa Lithopoulos found that extra oxygen damaged the structure and function of the brain’s blood vessels in experimental models of BPD. It also made it more difficult for brain stem cells to renew and become new neurons. The study has been published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
